Music Director

Leon Bosch is an internationally renowned double bassist, conductor and chamber musician who has lived in Tring for nearly 30 years. His connection to the town is central to the founding of Tring Camerata, through which he brings together his international experience with a commitment to enriching the local musical landscape.

He served for almost twenty years as Principal Double Bass of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and has also held principal positions with the London Mozart Players and Manchester Camerata, amongst others. He is currently Principal Double Bass of the World Orchestra for Peace and South Africa’s national orchestra, The Mzansi Philharmonic.

Alongside his orchestral career, Bosch has established a distinguished international reputation as a soloist and chamber musician, with an extensive solo discography of over twenty recordings and a long-standing commitment to expanding the repertoire of the double bass through commissions and first performances. He is Artistic Director of I Musicanti and the Ubuntu Ensemble and was recipient of the Cobbett Medal 2024 for Services to the Art of Chamber Music.

As a conductor, he has appeared with orchestras including the Bristol Ensemble, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Orphica at the Sophia Music Weeks Festival, the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Free State Symphony Orchestra, and maintains a close artistic association with The Hanover Band in both concert and recording projects.

A central strand of his conducting work is the revival of the music of Johann Matthias Sperger, including modern premieres, recordings and scholarly engagement. In 2026 he will conduct the final of the Sperger International Double Bass Competition in Berlin.

He is also leading a major recording project with I Musicanti of the complete Sinfonias Concertantes of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, based on a new critical edition prepared for Schott by Christopher Dingle.

As Music Director of Tring Camerata, Bosch brings a lifetime of experience at the highest level of performance to the development of a professional ensemble rooted in collaboration, excellence and community engagement.
